Help feed the community through Urban Gardening!
With subdivisions, gated communities, and the growth of concrete jungles taking over much of our green spaces, and the price of organically grown fresh vegetables and fruits, we have learned to be creative in our approach to gardening.
Making the most of what areas we have to work with in our local community, we began to explore the idea of growing healthy foods not only for the purpose of feeding our local village, but those in our community at large who often contact us with needs for food when they are struggling, financially, just to survive, and to provide for their families.
One way that you can help this effort is to join us in using what spaces are available to you on your property, to grow a few veggies to share with others, and we would love to talk with you about how to get started if you are not already using your green spaces and natural areas for food.
We have been gardening in our own backyard for several years now. Mostly small plants such as peppers, herbs, and spices, but with a small financial donation from our friend Shane Claiborne, and others at The Simple Way community in Kensington, PA, to help with some of the needs here in our community, we began to dream of something bigger than the distance a dollar can stretch, and we invested in vegetable seeds and plants with that gift, and our vision is for feeding the planet from $100 began to take root. (No pun intended)
We know that this is a lofty goal, but it is realistically within reach if we work together to make it happen, so each year when we harvest, we collect the seeds that are borne of these original plants, and we share them with others in the community so that they might plant and harvest, and we also mail seeds to friends and other communities around the US, and around the world, asking them to do the same when harvest time has come, so that we can potentially provide a means to feed the world from the gift of $100 from our friends at The Simple Way. We call them 'Simple Seeds' and we would be glad to provide you with 'Simple Seeds', so that you might begin your own Urban Garden, and help us to feed our village, but also to dream together that we might feed the world!
